I planted out a box of young Runner Bean seedlings.a week later I found about 70% had their first true leaves eaten away to the veins. No signs of slugs or snails-their slime or trails.Slug bait revealed none-Any ideas what caused this? The plants are making a slow recovery!

Hi, i have had a similar problem and was baffled, until one morning i spotted a couple of wood pigeons plodding about the plot tucking in to the leaves of my beans and kale. I bought a couple of those bamboo cloches off the internet- £15 for 3. They let the sun and rain in but keep the birds off. Since then i've had no problems. Hope this helps.

beans and peas being eaten...I think I heard / read somewhere that mice are partially to the young leaves. I think also that little voles and maybe shrews will have a go too. Mine are struggling to survive, what with being eated and this cold weather up in the NE...I think if we like eating the tender shoots of the peas, then little animals will too!
