Just a few observations from growing different varieties of tomato in my greenhouse:

Sungold - will never grow straight up and seems to be the only variety to suffer from magnesium deficiency.

Gourmet - Strong growers but highly susceptible to leaf curl and bottom end rot

Gardeners and Sweet Million- Took much longer to germinate the seeds and as a consequence are further behind in height but now starting to catch up with setting trusses.

    Anyone else care to share?

Interestingly I was thinking last night how different the varieties grow. I have four, Alicante, Gardeners Delight, San Marano, and Marmande. It is the first time that I have grown the last 2.

Alicante seem to be the straightest and the fastest to form fruit, with the fruit forming at the much same rate on the truss. The first of these are now red and should be ready to pick next week. Interestingly despite the difference in weather to last year this is only a week or so earlier.

Gardeners Delight seem slower to form fruit than Alicante but the first are turning red now. Really bad leaf curl on one plant.

San Marano lots of leaf growth sproting out all over the place. On the first/second trusses there is some full sized fruit but others have hardly developed at all. No sign of changing colour. Six or so trusses in less height that the others. Leaf curl on some.

Marmande quite alot of leaf growth, big fruit as you would expect but no sign or changing colour.
