I popped into my greenhouse yesterday afternoon & as I did a robin flew out, didn't think anything of it as I have the windows/door open all the time but whilst pottering around I decided to tidy up the potting tray & there in the corner under the tray shelf was a tiny nest with four babies in it!

Needless to say I left it well alone & I will do my best not to disturb them but certain jobs need to be done watering etc I don't need to use the tray as I can always pot things up outside, does anyone know how long robins are in the nest for?

    Apparently about 14 days.
    - this year I have had blue-tits for the first time in a nesting box that has been up for 4 years- black birds in a virginia creeper and pigeons in a fir tree- I have a theory that is probably rubbish but we have started keeping chickens this year -does anybody think as I do that the birds think it is safe in my garden because of the big birds?
Dunno - just like to think so..........
Probably just one of my fancy ideas....
    Sorry to hijack your question!!

I think animals and birds are in correspondence with one another, and that they take their cue about what is safe and what is not, from each other.
They seem to be able to read the signals around themselves.
Also they understand the difference when a person is just pottering about doing their normal jobs, and when there is a threat to themselves.
Robins in particular are very wise when it comes to human interaction.

Funny you should say that Geoff as we have started keeping chickens again this year after a gap of 4/5yrs!

We have always had a fair few birds in the garden but this year seems to be an explosion of them! we had two blackbirds nests right next to the chicken house, blue tits in the honeysuckle arbour & robins in the Ivy at the end of the garden but this was a complete surprise!

Everytime I go up the garden where the veg beds are I am followed by at least two blackbirds & a robin!

They will ignore you as long as you continue to do ordinary things and don't sidturb the nest. After all, you were doing these things when they built it, and laid the eggs and you did not even notice!

Have you seem the Springwatch pictures of the crazy places birds have nested? One on a roller coaster .........

Blimey no I haven't seen that!

I have reached a deal with Mr & Mrs Robin!

I potter about in greenhouse whilst they are out food hunting & when they arrive back & sit on the metal bird seed holder thingy I come out of greenhouse, they go in feed the kids & fly out again, I then go back in!

    Quite amicable really!

I've only known about them for two days but I know I'm going to miss them once they have flegedsmiley - sadface

"I'm going to miss them once they have fleged"

Well hopefully once they've left the nest you may have a few of the juves to keep you company outside while you are gardening.

Sadly one of the babies died today, I did my best to keep the temp down in the greenhouse by putting up extra shading & watering the floor but it was too much for it, temp reached 42c at one point,

feeling very sad about it but I suppose thats life as they say smiley - sadface
