My early spuds, growing in potato bags, are doing brilliantly - must be all this rain. They have lots of greenery but I am not sure when they are ready to pick. Should they produce flowers before I pick them? No sign of any flowers at all. Or should I just be brave and have a rummage in the growing bag??? Cheers

My first earlies have been in bud for almost two weeks without forming any flowers yet. Then I noticed that many of the young buds had been nipped off by I'm not sure what insect, leaving only the stems.
Being a bit impatient, I delved down the side of one of my bags and found a beautifully formed new potato, a tad on the small side, so I'll give mine a few days longer and welcome any more rain before the weekend..
I planted on Good Friday, so they'll have had 9 weeks on Friday coming,
Good luck with yours, hope you find a good harvest in the making.

Many thanks! Will have a little rummage this weekend. Am sooooooo looking forward to harvesting but mainly eating them!

I was unsure if my charlottes were ready yet so had a feel down the side of the sacks on Tuesday. I found 12oz of really nice potatoes. I'm leaving the smaller ones to get bigger in the sack.

Finally had my first flower today (in one of seven bags) so the weekend might be my first taste of my own potatoes. Rocket, kestrel and charlottes and I haven't a clue which it will be.

An old man once told me that "when he werra lad" there was always a local fair held the second Sunday in July, and if you didn`t have home-grown new potatoes, peas and mint on the table for the day of that fair you "weren`t a proper gardener".
He said some years, if the weather had been poor, he would be scrabbling around the potato roots, trying to get enough for a meal.
It was a matter of his reputation being at stake.
Your post reminded me of him.

Yes how do you know if your spuds are brilliant?
Bin diggin' them out 'ave yer?
I have a friend who had potatoes for lunch in early June. He insisted; his 9 year old son had dug 'em out...... they are a new species called pea potatoes.

I've 5 varieties growing in 7 bags no idea which is which as the labels were covered with foilage weeks ago. Only one bag has flowered, me thinks it was Duke of York. I'm going to cut back the foilage tomorrow and pick next week. Not all varieties flower.
I started planting out on 4th April so the first bag will have been growing about 12 weeks, the varieties are a mix of 1st and 2nd earlies.
Did you have a rummage in the bags, I'm tempted to have a look.
