My strawberries are ripening fast and swelling to huge proportions now that the rain has arrived. They are delicious, but I've noticed that a few are rotting, particularly where they rest on the damp soil. I know that straw is the traditional protection, but I as wondering whether shredded paper (office/computer paper from a shredder) would help? Or would it just go soggy in the rain? Has anyone tried it?
I think you are asking for more trouble putting paper round- you can buy special strawberry mats to protect the fruit but I always think that straw is not only effective- but is also pleasing to the eye?
Geoff
I've made the mistake of putting hay around my strawbs. Unlike straw, hay seems to keep the moisture and promote the fruit rotting. Oh well, yer lives and learns. But the gooduns taste great. Cheers, Tony.
You are quite right, of course, Geoff. Straw is the proper stuff. I was being a bit lazy as I didn't have any to hand. I have now bought a pack of straw and intend to tackle the strawberry bed this afternoon (quite an inviting task, with all those yummy strawberries close at hand!)
