    Hi

There have recently been a lot of ants in my greenhouse. The other day I picked up a tray of marigolds which had been placed on the soil in a corner and masses of ants ran out - there goes the theory about marigolds keeping pests away!

When I started poking into the soil I realised that there were a lot of long oval cream coloured eggs in the soil and the ants appeared to be trying to carry these around. Exploring further this was wider that just under the marigold pot.

Anyway, the poor ants met their doom with me pouring a kettle of boiling water over the soil. My question now is does anyone know what these egss are and also why the ants would be trying to carry them around?

I think that the eggs are/were baby ants...the adults were trying to move them somewhere out of harm's way.

I had an ant's nest too near my decking for comfort and similarly did the boiling water treatment. It was distressing to witness the same scenario smiley - sadface

Ant eggs? Really? The eggs seemed far too big for ants - about half a fingernail length. Unless there are loads of them in each egg?

The boiling water didn't bother me one bit, but I have previous ant killing history! Many years ago I had an ant infestation inside the house where I lived. Got up one morning and they were everywhere in my kitchen, including a few doing backstroke in the kettle so I switched it on .................
