good morning to each,my potato stems are very tall up to my thigh and im 6ft 4,i was told by a friend that there was too much nitrogen in the soil,i have used B F and Bone, cow manure pellets and seaweed pellets have i over fed the veg plot as everything else looks great, any info would be much appreciated, kind regards Chris
some varieties grow far taller than others
I have seen Cara over six feet long
they always collapse
you may have over done the Nitrogen faction which wil not help
it will also discourage high tuber numbers but sahould encourage large potatoes
Hi Chris,
Glad you've persuaded farmersteve to venture back to this forum.
Last year I tried growing long haulmed potatoes (Désirée) up a structure using broad guage wire fencing in an inverted V and reported the results on this forum.
With little effort the potaoes were persuaded to grow within the structure and eventually grew out of the top. It enabled me to treat them more effectively against blight and I achieved about a 50% yield increase over those that were left to straggle across the ground. It was not a proper trial however and I intended to repeat again this year which I have not been able to do.
It might be an idea to try this to see if you manage to achieve the same success.
Good luck L

Thats a very kind remark thank you
I have actually changed my job to one which unfortunately I have less time to twiddle my fingers
one day I will post on here what I was doing last year
