I have been running a small school garden for the last 3 years quite successfully. This year though the crop of peas have been a disaster. Very frail thin growth, hardly any pods and now look like shriveling completely. I have given up on them and will get the boys to dig them out tomorrow. Anyone else had the same problem?
ps I make sure the crops are rotated yearly and they have had plenty of water.

I've had very much the same experience over the years and almost gave up on peas. I knew in my heart that it's all down to soil preparation but have not had an abundance of compost till this season. I dug in a good quantity of home compost comprising of, amongst other things, chicken manure and made sure they had plenty of water. The results have been astounding. Excellent crop.

My purple podded peas are astounding. Going to pick a load and freeze them, making purple podded pea wine from the purple pods of the purple podded peas ! Try saying that after a glass or two ! Cheers, Tony.

I will offer my sympathy, I am trying to grow veg for the first time and even though I read a lot and watched hours of old GWs I am still struggling. There are so many factors, water, sunshine, pests and diseases. I clearly underestimated my soil preparation.
But I am hoping that with advice and support that it will get easier before I give up.

I hope your pea wine comes out better than my attempt. It looked crystal clear but tasted awful!. Cleaned the sink wonderfully and unblocked the drain. Good stuff, in some respects, though not in the potable line.

I'd be interested in how you get on.

Well dirtyrob as I said last three years have been great crops!
I studied well and did all the right things. The soil was prepared and they have been watered well Maybe they were a duff packet of seeds.
Anyway they have been dug up today and composted .... try again next year.
    Thanks everyone for advice.

I thought the suggestion of making wine out of the peas rather inappropriate for a school garden
but if the end product is awful as some suggest perhaps it may be a good idea smiley - smiley
