Pea pods are from one single flower so how come some peas don't swell up in the pod? Cheers, Tony.
It's been a long time since I did botany, but I think the answer has to do with the fact that each single pea flower has several ovules in it - that is, several potential peas - and not just one. Each of those ovules has to be fertilised by a single pollen grain, and if an ovule doesn't get fertilised then it doesn't grow into a pea
I've looked for a clear explanation on Google and can't find any good ones, but this one might do
Thanks Northwards for going to so much trouble. Cheers, Tony.
So am I forgiven for my musical tastes??
We have a fantastic crop of peas, grown under a fine mesh net so virtually free of maggots (which is a joy). The previous message made me wonder how the peas are fertilised when covred like that?
Garden peas are self-fertile: the pollen can fertilise the ovules (=young seeds) of the same flower, so the flowers can be isolated from insects, wind etc., entirely and still develop peas.
Thanks for asking that question. I was idly wondering the same thing the other day. Isn't the internet wonderful?
Yes, it allows you to discuss serious global quearies such as
"Where does the bit of sock go when you get a hole in your sock" ! ! ! !
Cheers, Tony.
