Just been picking goosberries and the bushes are enormous (and lethal) can I prune now or after leaf fall. How do I prune them. Its a job I hate and have lengthy discussions with OH on when and how. He just hacks away merrily!
This link should answer your question;
I did a Summer prune, for the first time, after they fruited last year. Just a general tidy up, shortening any damaged, crossing, too long branches. I then did the main Winter prune over Christmas/New Year- it was the only chance I got!
John Cushnie's book on pruning says you can do it up to early Spring, when you can tell which buds are viable.
I then feed with potash & re-mulch. Certainly worked this year, had/have loads & no room left in freezer! J.
