I have ordered some seed potatoes for Christmas eating (optimistic) I would prefer not to use shop bought compost if I can use what I have in the garden already - loam, leaf mould, bought sharp sand, soil from under the bonfire. Is this practicable or do I need to head for the shops? Please tell me of your outrageous success / lamentable failure in this area.
I have successfully grown potatoes in bags filled with a mix of garden soil and leaf mould. I do give them a couple of feeds with tomato fertiliser to help them along.
I use a mix of one third garden soil, one third good compost from the heap and one third multi-purpose to which I add Westland slow-release fertiliser. What ever you use, you will not get the bags full of potatoes often shown in adverts. I reckon 2 kgs is pretty good.
