I sowed some strawberries on 30th May and to my great suprise they have now reached the 3 to 4 leaf stage but they are still ever so tiny with no stem and the largest leaves are only 5mm across.

Not expecting them all to come up there are now quite a few seedlings in each module. The variety is fragaria, an alpine variety I think.

Q is I'm not sure what to do with them now. The distructions are in French. They look to tender to prick out but at some point they will need to be handled.

Should I wait till they get a little bigger and would they be ok pricked out into a slightly larger pots with a few plants to each pot.

They are currently in a plastic GH with the front open all day and night.

I too have grown some from seed this year; can't remember the variety. I planted them out from the modules into the garden. I presume they are very hardy like wild strawberries.

I think the individual plants need to be separated, either into individual pots or into the ground.

I was thinknig they needed seperating but they really are tiny and probably to small to plant out yet, a good down pour of rain would probably wash them away.

I'll pot a dozen up and let some continue to grow in their modules, that way if the potted up one's don't survive I can try again in a couple of weeks with the one's left.

They sound like the alpine strawberries I grew from seed a few years ago. Mine are fragaria alpina variety "golden alexandria". I believe "fragaria" just means strawberry. Did you mean to have the small alpine ones or were you expecting the normal large fruited garden sorts?
They should grow on well being potted on the way you intend. You can plant them in the ground when they have got a bit bigger. Mine are used as decorative edging to my different plots. They are very hardy and require little or no care and produce tiny very tasty berries all summer long. They do not send out runners, but sometimes self -seed if you don't pick them. If you wanted the normal garden berries, you need to get runners. I am presently pulling up hundreds and chucking them on the compost heap Probably, anyone on your allotment site would be happy to give you some . But check to make sure they don't have crinkled up or misshapen leaves which might indicate a virus..

    Hi, honeysuckle:

The variety must be 'fraisier des 4 saisons' if fragaria means strawberry.

I was expecting alpine one's after somone else on the message boards kindly told me which variety they were and if they are similar to yours they sound ideal to plant in place of my normal strawberries which are currently under currant bushes and putting out runners everywhere.

Knowing they don't put out runners is helpful, I'll pot up alot more now to fill the space.

Just to update you guy's...and thanks for the advise..

I potted up the plants some singularly some in bunches and after they grew on planted out about 30 plants a couple of weeks ago under currant bushes. They're looking good, not one has wilted.

Honeysuckle; Silly Q but will they produce strawberries next year or will I need to wait till the following year.
