At the start of the season I got some cauliflower plants fromB+Q, they are growing well, I've never grown them before but am I doing the right thing in snapping the lower leaves to cover the cauli, I I can remember it being mentioned on here before but why do I do it ?

This is supposed to keep the cauliflower head white and stop it from discolouring in the sun. I don't think there's any other reason. I wouldn't snap too many of the leaves, as the plants needs them to grow and mature

Knew there was a reason to do it, but, when the rain eased of I went to check on them and one looked a bit discolored so cut it off to have with my dinner, cooked it in some milk it went white again but the taste OMG it was out of this world, it was only the size of a fist but well worth it and as there's only me it was big enough.

I've managed to grow some lovely caulis this year (from bought plants) and found I needed to cut them as soon as they looked ready because if I left them even for a day or so they started to go over and the curds spread out if you know what I mean. We still ate those ones though. Am now waiting to see if the plants I grew from seed will actually produce anything - have not managed to grow caulis from seed in the past but the plants look healthy so fingers crossed. You're right though, Rain, they tasted wonderful!
