I have a cottage style garden full to brimming with flowers/shrubs/trees - but no vegetables, well I do have a tripod of 3 beans amongst a lot of sweet peas and a few beetroot. Feel guilty and must make room for vegetables. I eat lots of veg actually. Can I have advice about that 'bear earth' time - People ask me if I have anything against bear earth. Monty dons garden made me feel so bad the other day - it looked so neat and health. Some encouragement please.

There are some things which will grow in the most minimal of space without leaving 'bare earth' after the harvest.

If you haven't grown before or are reluctant to replace plants with veg why not experiement first. Growing quick growing veg in containers, hanging baskets and window boxes will produce veg which once harvested the containers can either be put away for the following year or reused in the same season. Radish, spring onions and salad leaves do well in window boxes. Tomato tumbler will do well in hanging baskets and planted with herbs like basil to improve the taste makes for an interseting display.

Growing veg vertically takes up little room meaning few plants need to removed to provide space for them and things like beans and peas can be grown with climbing plants. You can get some interesting coloured beans to match the colour scheme of an established garden. There are varieties of cucumber, courgettes, squash and toms which will climb outside depending on where you live and whether you get ample sun throughout the growing season.

Hope this helps but probably doesn't answer your Q about bare earth time...
