One of my sunflower plants is 2.5 m tall already but no full flower yet
is this abnormal/record?
I think you will need to be at least 6 metres to even get in the running
Hi Sheraza
Our sunflowers are abnormally high too, so I thought. We also thought we had a record in our back garden and were bracing up for visits by Guiness book people (over-optmisitic us , till we found on the internet that the tallest one is over 8 m high
Our sunflowers have just started forming heads and are beginning to turn towards the sun too...so it should be soon for you too!
One of our sunflower plants snapped over two weeks ago. When it was busy getting bigger by the day, I used metal wire to secure it to the cane, which dug deep into its stem, as the stalk fattened! I was appalled to see it go at over 9 feet, as a little head was just about begining to form on the top. I put the broken 5 feet and a bit in a watering can and emptied a few flower food sachets that you get with supermaket flowers and lo, we saw yesterday little yellow petals emerging from it! It will probably not be a giant sun flower but still better than a dead plant...I am chuffed!
Talking about sunflowers, it seems to be sunny in London today!
No record. I've got a couple around 3m that haven't bloomed yet. They take time. And careful watering.
The average height for a sunflower according to the info I found on the net is 12ft (approx 4m), if yours hasn't flowered yet there's time for more growth.
Mine flowered at about 7ft and then the head snapped off with a second currently flowering at about 6.5ft.
supposedly whatever height the flower first appears at, is half the height when it will finish growing.
Really!!!! Have I understood it correctly?
Well, mine had flower heads at about 12 feet...so do they have another 12 feet go up?
I thought when they flowered they stopped growing mine certainly have. It might depend on the variety though. Which one are you growing sanjyogi? It usually tells you on the packet how tall they'll get. I really don't think it'll grow another 12ft if it's in flower, but you can live in hope
Hi Zoomer
Mine stopped growing too...they are about 14 feet tall, and I didn't expect them to grow any taller after the flowers set in, but one of the posters seemed to suggest that!
The flowers are huge though...about a foot in diameter!
