Hi guys, it's a while since I was on this board but I am growing second crop spuds for the first time. They are in good form and we have had a few meals from them. My question is, can I leave them in the ground until needed or should I lift and store.
Thanks ,Willy.
Leave them in the ground - the slugs deserve a goo feast ! ! !
Lift them as soon as you can, put them on wire tray (or the lawn) for the skins to dry and harden off then store in a tatty sack, NOT a black bin bag. Cheers, Tony.
A good feast as well as a goo feast ! Cheers, Tony.
You should only lift and store maincrop potatoes. Earlies and second earlies you dig as you need them. I have done this for years with Charlottes and they stay underground fine until i want to eat them. If your crop are maincrop make sure you dry them out do not wash them and only store perfect ones. Store only perfect ones none with damage in paper or hessian sacks in a cool dark shed.
You can lift and store if you want, but just make sure you store them in a good paper bag. Paper bags used by potato farmers have three to four layers of good-quality brown paper. If you can't get these bags, use newspaper layers and make sure the clamp or pile stays dry. And don't wash them!! A little bit of clay stuck to them is not a problem - when you take them out of your storage area, it will be dry and can be rubbed off.
if you are not prone to slug damage keep lifting as you eat them
they will taste far better in my opinion
if you want to stroe them remove the foliage first and let the grounf be clear for a fortnight beforee lifting to store as you run the risk of blight getting into the bag and you will have one awful stiinky mess
