I purchased it as a cucumber from the WI stall at a local garden show.
Many thanks in anticipation.

I don't like to say it and I hope I'm wrong, but could this be the dreaded thornapple? Cheers, Tony.

Could it be a bumpy gourd or squash. There are so many different ones. I do not think it is a thorn apple that is more prickly than bumpy.

I think it is a cucumber. I grew up on a farm in Canada where we grew our own. All cucumbers I saw as a child were prickly ones. Didn't see any long thin ones until I came to Encland. I think you have let it grow a little too big. Doesn't it taste like a cucumber?

It looks exactly the same as the fruit on my gherkin plants. The seed packet labelled them as Gherkins, or Parisian Pickling Cornichons. I've never grown them before, and when I looked up on t'internet what to do with the fruit, it said you could eat them the same as a cucumber. Which I did. And they are very nice. And I haven't been poisoned! You just need to peel the knobbly and prickly bits off. Trust the WI lady and enjoy them!

Have look at this:
There are some interesting types of cucumbers, one of which might be the one you have.
I wouldn't be keen to grow the 'Exploding Cucumber' though!!
I don't think yours is a thornapple.
