My strawberries haven’t had a good year, maybe because of position- a bit shaded & crowded by other plants, or maybe they're all just getting a bit past it. So I’ve decided to start over for next year, I will use any rooted runners, but would like to start anew. Do any other GYOers have suggestions about which varieties to go for? What do you all think are the tastiest, easiest to grow, most prolific fruiters? Is there a best of all?
Would love to have your suggestions, also, if planting form seed, should I start them now? I’m guessing that plants grown form seed early next year probably won't see much fruit till the following year.

The best strawberries I've ever tasted are Mara des Bois, which is a perpetual fruiting variety. I bought them from Ken Muir last year and they are fabulous, delicious large fruits, and best of all they keep fruiting.

They've just started again this year (the have a short rest after their first flush in June) and last year I ate the last one on the 1st Nov. They look pretty too, dark green shiny leaves and lots of flowers, and best of all they are very prolific not just one or two berries per plant.

Everyone who tasted them thought they were delicious, the most common response was on the lines of ' it's a real Winbledon strawberry'. There are several plotholders on our allotment who've decided to restock with them!

Another delicious early variety is Gariguette, I think I've spelt that right, also from Ken Muir.

I have some of each just to make sure I get the early straws and the last too!

    Hope this helped

    Hello Whatalottie,
Thanks so much for the advice and suggestions, I've just checked out the Ken Muir website and will get myself some new strawberry plants as soon as they're available.
    Many thanks
