Hi everyone,
It's our 2nd year in a new home and the first year the Conference Pear tree in our garden has had a bumper crop. We let them on the tree last year as we had no idea what we were doing.
How do I know my pears are ready (still green and hard and some are small) and how do I store them and/ or ripen them?
Thanks in advance
-Constant
Take them off the tree as they ripen (or a smidge prior), wrap in newspaper and store in a single layer in those blue and or black 'mushroom trays' Gently squeeze them through the paper and when softening BINGO tasty pears. I'm looking into making pear wine as out Conference is groaning with fruit.
Cheers, Tony.

Thanks Tony,
How do I know they are about to ripen. They are currently falling off the tree whilst small.

Same as apples (I presume), gently lift the fruit, if it comes away from the twig it's ripe. Cheers, Tony.
If they are falling off the tree, it is because there are too many for the tree to support.
If you want good quality pears and they are still swelling you can remove some of the pears to help the tree out. Certainly do this if the branches are weighed down too much.
Apply the same method of evaluating the pears as you use in the supermarket or greegrocers. Do they look ripe? Gently cradle one in your hand. Does it feel ripe? Pick one. Does it taste ripe?
Look up your pear and find out when it should ripen. Early, late or after storage. Cooking or culinary? You can of course cook any you pick inadvertantly before they are ripe.

Thank you for taking the time to answer. Really appreciate it. Shall do as you have suggested.
