I have had quite a good crop of garlic, but some are really small and seem just like single bulbs rather than lots of cloves, are these okay to eat or should I plant these back in in September and hope that they grow further next year? Thanks for any help smiley - smiley

They are perfectly edible, it is just that they weren't in the ground long enough to form cloves. You can always plant some of these and plant newly bought jobs side by side and let us know how the fared . Cheers, Tony.

Plant garlic cloves in the Autumn for the best results. Only plant cloves from the outside of the bulb, and make sure they are single cloves, not doublers.

I would send away for good garlic bulbs, you only have to buy them once, you can go on planting cloves from the best bulbs year after year.

Have to say my garlic were planted well after New Year this year and have made very good bulbs.

Oh, and don't plant them too deep.

I am not quite sure how garlic works. Last year I put my cloves in before the winter - which was very severe, so no shortage of cold weather - and for some reason the bulbs are nearly all single, undivided bulbs, and not very big. They died back in the spring, in the dry weather, and I pulled them up then. They taste fine but are not so convenient to use like this.

In the past I have had more success with producing proper garlic bulbs. I didn't know about using the outer cloves only, and will try that next time.

Thanks, the ones I did last year were bought from Hampton flower show, planted in September and harvested about now and were wonderful, I brought these from Wilkinsons, I suppose you get what you pay for, the Hampton ones were from the Isle of Wight company, will go with them again. Still happy with my crop, small as they are, should see me and hubby through for quite a few months.smiley - smiley
