I have grown tomatoes for a few years. This year, for the first time I am growing the variety Shirley.

The lower trusses on over half the plants have torn part of the stem, just abopve where they join. The tomatoes will obviously now get no bigger, but why is this happening.

Is Shirley known to be a very heavy cropper ?

The plants are tied to vertical bamboo canes and are fed every 4 or 5 days in the pots, and watered below (ring culture)

What way should I consider to support the trusses higher up the plants ?

I can't remember ever having this problem in the past.

I haven't seen it happen even with bigger, heavier fruit than Shirley, and I've grown some weighty toms. The branches and stems and their connections are usually very strong. If you fear for the others, probably all you can do is support them. Tie something soft and flexible around the branch, close to the toms, to take the weight, and tie the other end off to the support cane further up. Create a sort of sling.

I get this with Shirley and have been growing them for a few years-frustrating- and have to do the sling thing- wouldn't like to say it is just this variety or is just one of those things .

    Many thanks

I'll try the sling approach. luclily I have a horizontal wire, to which the canes are attached, so will try and tie the trusses to this.
