For me this year has been mostly a disaster.

I had the plot prepared in good time, seeds sown, planting schedules worked out etc. First it was too hot and the first sowings got cooked. Then it was too cold and wet and subsequent plantings just stopped growing; squash - 3 varieties, sweetcorn - 2 varieties, cucumbers. Bean output average at best. Radishes annihilated by slugs, carrots by root fly. The only positives are good courgettes and fingers crossed on the beetroot. I don't think I did anything wrong particularly, other than perhaps not fleecing the carrots. Tomatoes and chillies grown under glass haven't been outstanding, but good enough.

Of course I'll try again next season but it is proving a most frustrating endeavor judging by the last couple of years.

Know what you mean. Most of my crops have underperformed this year for reasons which puzzle me. Perhaps my neighbour's into voodoo! Toms have been a special disaster equal to a bad case of blight... poor growth, shrivelled leaves, very poor fruit setting, waste of effort. Disappointing potatoes and carrots in containers. Runner beans well behind. Opposite of last year despite similar treatment. On the other hand, overloaded with courgettes for some reason and gawd knows what I'm going to do with the ton of plums coming on!

I think it's just been a difficult year, sun and heat too early and when I needed it there was not quite enough, a lack of rain at the right times and sometimes the wind was very persistent and cooling....perhaps I'm just rubbish. I'm sure a more experienced gardener would have done better.

I have had stuff but done better in the past.

I was surprised today when I turned over a small area I had grown mange tout even though a couple of days ago it rained very heavily it was bone dry now. right next to reasonably healthy looking spinach.

Well, I think every year is a year that is good for some things, and not so good for others.
IMO it`s been a good year for roses.
smiley - smiley I know that`s no consolation to you.

    Hi cool,
Well because of the house renovations taking a lot of my time & then the hip replacement killing 12 weeks, i put the allotment on hold so i could try and keep the garden's borders in a tidy state and so the veg planting etc has been little and less this year, and then anything veg wise had to join the flower beds,

But the toms i put outside as quick as i could (due to going in hospital) the same for all the peppers, and they've all done very well,

The fruit trees i planted 3 years ago (plums/ pears/Peach & cherry again this year have all really produced very well,

But dont feel to bad, gardening is like that, some you win & some you dont.

    Good luck for next time.

    Regards Punpun

It's been a bad year for me too - still not had any tomatoes, and only one courgette! Beans are only now starting to set.
The one success is that for the first time I've managed to grow spring onions and beetroot (although beets are very small)

If you have not watered regularly in many parts of England and Wales you would not have had a good many usual crops at all.

Now there is plenty of rain and it is warm so, in the nature of things, you should do well.(unless you have as severe a hail storm as someone did.

It'sbeen a difficult year here. The first seeds I sowed in the greenhouse were eaten by field rats. The next lot had to wait too long to go outside as we had a drought from mid March to early May and very little rain until a month ago so the ground has been hard and dry despite masses of compost going on every year.

Then it got cold which checked the toms, the beetroot didn't germinate, the iceberg lettuce rotted, the cos lettuce bolted, the red spinach - sown 6 weeks ago - has already bolted, the broccoli has produced one set of small heads and is now asleep, the pumpkins have set few fruits and they're not swelling cos it's been cold and the strawberries have been numerous but tiny..........

However, broad beans good, oak leaf lettuce excellent, red kale OK, rhubarb, blackcurrants and recurrants good, blueberries good. We should get some decent damsons. The crab apples are so laden I'm having to support some branches.

I have fennel and broccoli plugs to plant and new strawberries too - ever the optimist we gardeners.

Its been a very good year, the greenhouse toms are splendid, both the bell peppers and the long ones are turning red. The outdoor marmande are turning, beetroot are going in the freezer, outdoor peppers have small fruit, onions and garlic are fantastic. I planted 7 varieties of spuds with very good results.

Please do not imagine that you are a rubbish gardener because crops have done poorly this year - it ain't so! This has been a dreadful year for very many gardeners, and for that matter commercial growers as well. You know about the bitter cold, then excessive heat, dry then wet, all in the apparently wrong order - not even the most experienced gardener can do much about that. I have afriend who has, usually, the most amazing allotment which fills me with the sin of envy every year, but even he has struggled with many basic crops this year. Take heart, it will be better next year - that is the mantra by which all we gardeners live and work, or we'd never get anything done at all. Next year there will be a mild, bright, dampish Spring, then a warm and bright early summer and crops to fill the barns twice oever - and if not, well, there is always the year to follow when surely it will happen ..............

Ping My year has been a disaster, i was more ready this year than i ever have been in the past. My tomatoes were good at the prep stage but once i planted them direct into the soil in the greenhouse that is when it all started going downhill. The only thing i can put it down to was i was given some manure which i spread in the greenhouse & on the veg plot, there must have been some thing in it that turned everything sour my toms & veg were very poor in growth that i pulled them all out & burnt them. i had some tomato seedlings left which i planted in pots & they seem o/k so i know it wasnt the plants. Got rid of the rest of the manure & soil am looking forward to next year now.

Rabbits invade this garden fairly late in the year, and are impossible to exclude although, i9f I could find some snares, I would put them gently back in the field, but snares are not lawful.

My own crops are disappearing fast, particularly the tasty fennel fronds.
I've got wire over the winter sprouts and broccolli.

Ah well; my main crop now is fruit, and rabbits are not interested in them.
The deer have not found their way in yet but i saw one trying very hard the other day, right under my very nose, and barked at me, when I protested! If they do get in, they come every night for the sweetness of Gar's apples!

    Mostly my crops have been reasonably successful this year with only afew disappointments;

My mooli didn't do well at all, I tried two sowings but failed on both counts. I tried a black radish similar to mooli, it grew but the roots were all mis-shaped, not at all appetizing, that went on the compost. My bulb fennel is not looking good at present and a row of turnip and a 2nd to last lot of beetrrot have been munched through by caterpillars this week.

My courgettes started off really well and produced quite a few courgettes before they were covered in mildew, now there are only three plants left looking very sad for themselves.

Had a glut with mangtout but peas early and petit pou didn't do much.

There's still alot left in the ground though my sweetcorn is over 5ft and one varierty has flowered. I've chad, lettuce leaves, carrots, celertric, runner beans, squash, beetrrot, kohi and lots of herbs still going strong.

I had my first peppers today on a salad. In fact everything on the salad was out of the garden.
