Went to the garden centre today to buy some green manure and spotted a marigold pack that was sold as a co-plant for tomatoes. Has anyone tried this and if so what was the result. Cant remember what it was supposed to protect against but I think it was hoverfly.
Hoverfly are friends not foes. I'm not sure what marigolds protect toms against either, but they look great on the allotment if the slugs don't get them, and I love the smell, so that's why I grow them. My toms don't seem to get attcked by anything (except blight sometimes). I' hope someone can answer your question.
I grow marigolds hoping to deter whitefly. As the OP said, hover flies are friends not foes.
Maybe they are grown to attract them for pollination reasons.
A bit of googling tells me Marigolds kills some type of Nematodes and assorted flying pests. Might be worth trying next year.
The idea of planting marigolds with tomatoes is to repel white fly-they dont like the smell- common companion planting
African marigolds are supposed to deter aphids and attract hoverflies, I think it's their smell which does it and hoverflies kill aphids.
I plant them with toms and can't say I've ever had a huge problem with aphids in the GH.
Growing basil with toms is also supposed to improve their taste.

What kind of marigold is everyone talking about? There are calendulas and there are tagetes (dwarf and african marigolds), very different.
I've planted tagetes in my GH this year hoping to deter nematodes and perhaps aphids and whitefly. Since I have 2 beds and alternate tomatoes/greenpeppers in one side and melons in the other. My GH is noticeably free of insects of any kind which is fairly unusual; certainly no whitefly or aphids so maybe the tagetes are having some deterrent effect.
Couldn't tell you whether the nematodes are cringing too. L
