    Hi,

being a novice I planted garlic last october and watched happily as the tops grew and by may everything seemed to be going well until it all disappeared, not just the tops but the bulbs as well. I dug recently for a while and it's all gone, I assumed when the tops had gone the bulbs would still be growing.

Position - End of big garden but under heavy shade due to a lot of trees.

I'm going to give it another go since my tomatoes and aubergines have been a roaring success but I'm wondering this time if i should plant in pots and maybe give the odd watering.

    So any advice gratefully received.

    Steve.

Hi there, what a shame for you re your garlic. It may be that they got very wet indeed and the bubs just rotted away? You say they were in deep shade, which is not ideal for them, as the leaves do need some sunshine to get the bubs to mature. Once the tops have died back the bulbs cannot contine to grow, as they need the action of the leaves to allow this to happen.

Do try again, amybe in a lighter area, keep an eye on the tops - which you said were growing well, when they go over then you should have bulbs to collect. Was it reasonably cold where you are? No idea where that may be of course, garlic does need a period of cold to get the bulbs to split into the well known cloves.

We grow it in pots, 2 cloves or toes to a pot, plenty of water during the growing season and have had good crops the last few times. Have never grown them in open ground.

Just thought, maybe you have worms, slugs, snails or hedgehogs with educated palates who like some garlic with thier dinners as much as you do ...................

    Thanks for the reply,

the tops were growing fine but thinking about it mabe they dried out and died during april/may, it certainly would have been due to rotting since I live in blakheath in london and certain parts of my garden suffer from tree cover. Having a large area and loving garlic I planted a lot and was deeply surprised to find it 'missing'

It's suppose to be the easiest thing to grow but I'll have a go again this autumn and just eat the aubergines and tomatoes without the garlic!
