I suppose we can count ourselves lucky. Only problems have been vandals (not for the last two years) and the deer. Holders water allotments when they know the owner is away and excess plants and produce passed on to others..

    erm>

It could be safer on the streets than going down to some allotments!

Interesting read ...we may in our life time see the first ASBO for an allotment holdersmiley - biggrin

I don't have an allotment but my home over look's one and over the past 20 or so years there have been some issues.

I remember one holder didn't have a garden at home so coverted her plot into one were she could relax with friends. She had a tiny section for veg, the rest was coverted within 12 months into lawn with a bistro table as it's centre where at weekends she regularly entertained friends over a bottle of wine whilst plot holders were tending their crops, you can imagine they were none too pleased.

I've found plot holders really helpful, not to bore you with a long story, I had an issue with a neighbour over the size of a fence and on reflection I was bullied into having the size we now have but I enlisted the help of the plot holders to ring me at work when work men arrived to build the fence, (the neighbour couldn't tell me when they were coming) they were ever so good, a retired gentleman range me at work and told me the workman are here and had told them they couldn't start work until I'd checked what size they were going to build to.

I've fallen foul though, a couple of years ago a tonne of muck was delivered at the top of the cobbled alley (this is Lancashire we like our cobbled streets) on the same day a man with a van delivered my GH,right outside my back gate blocking the free for all access to the muck only for the length of time it takes to off load but the more fitter eliment were none to pleased whilst the less energetic said ' you take your time love, we'll catch our breath!'

I always thought our allotments were a peaceful friendly place but recently its been chaos - physical violence, suspension, apeals, resignation of entire comittee, personal insults, campaigns of intimidation - its a real eye opener! I suppose anywhere that has a cross segment of society will see same issues as we see in the "outside" world. I just keep my head down and tackle the weeds! We did have our prize winning (in our novice eyes) pumpkin stolen from the plot last year - I still hope it was outsiders. This years pumpkin is being kept well hidden under huge foliage and some rampant neighbouring squash plants!

I've not experienced any of the extreme behaviours as per the newspaper article, moving from a rural allotment site in East Anglia to one in South London has been an eyeopener with regards similar and different behaviours amongst both allotment holders and the people who run the sites.
    East Anglia
main holders -- retired males who don't like change, or new ways of doing things. Will stand in groups watching you and shaking their heads, ["you don't want to do it like that!"]. Always moaning about each other and the old ways are the best.
parish council couldn't care less up till 2 years ago when waiting list boomed. Now only half plots given out, inspection every 3 months, threatened eviction if plots weren't fully utilised [mainly due to people on waiting list going around checking on plots and harassing parish clerk]. New plot holder mainly middle class middle aged ladies or young families.. more women getting plots which infuriates the retired males even more. problems with vandals and breakins, but only one incidence of plant sabotage in 12 years.
    South London
main holders -- retired males who don't like change, or new ways of doing things. Will stand in groups watching you and shaking their heads, ["you don't want to do it like that!"]. Always moaning about each other and the old ways are the best.
Mainly West Indians who also tend to grow crops in groups, i.e one plot holder will grow all potatoes, another all sweetcorn or the rampant Callaloo, then split produce beteen them.
Not many younger people or women.
Committee inspects once a month, eviction notices if plots untidy or underused. Pressure from local council to keep site in order [league tables etc]. Not much in the way of vanadalism, but urban fox damage to plants is a real pain.
Plots still let a full plots despite waiting list.
Best all is that there is good pub within 100 yards of site gate
will have to change my name now.....ex plot thirty
