We are about to erect a new greenhouse (8 x 6). What are the pro's and con's with having an area of direct access to soil in the greenhouse??

I'm no expert I'm afraid as I've only had my greenhouse for a few months but I was told that it was good to have some bare earth in a greenhouse as it helps regulate the humidity. I have some paving stones in the centre section (mine is 8x7) and then bare earth round the back and sides on which my growbags sit. While you can plant things in the earth directly you have to refresh the earth each season to stop troublesome diseases taking hold. Hopefully you will get some more advice from seasoned greehousers. Good luck in any case I have to say I am thrilled with mine. We put ours quite near the house (not much choice really as its a small garden) and we've had an electrician run an armoured cable from the house, through a piece of pipe which we laid beneath our foundations (ours is a wooden greenhouse so needed some foundations) so we have a power point in the greenhouse for a propagator.

I''m no expert either, I've been using my GH for about 18 months so still learning and have a bed down one side with a gravel path in the middle and paving on two sides. Figured I'd covered all options I grow stuff in the bed in bottomless pots and things in pots and bags.

I was under the impression if you have a bed the top soil needs changing every third year which if you can't do a crop rotation makes sense to keep down or eliminate any pests in the soil although changing every year makes better sense and I did need to take some of the soil out last year to make room for fresh compost.

I've not found much difference in having a bed or not, you can get away with watering less in the bed and the roots are less restricted but plants in pots can be moved if needs must.
