looks like I'm gonna get a little greenhouse for my birthday around 8 x 6 I think, I'm under pressure to put it an old concrete shed base that would mean all the plants would have to be in pots and containers.

My inclination would be to put it on soil, is it realistic to keep the same small area of soil in good nick year after year ?

One problem with having soil borders is that diseases can build-up and it becomes less productive over the years. I remove about a foot of soil every 2 years and replace it with new stuff, spreading the old stuff on the borders. The up-side is that far less watering is required, which can become a real pain when everything is grown in pots unless you also install a drip-watering system (they can be found fairly cheaply if you look around.) One good thing about having a concrete base is that it is easy to keep everything clean and sterile, which is quite important in a greenhouse.
If you don't water pot-grown tomatoes (for example) regularly, you end up with blossom-end rot, split skins etc. and going on holidays means you have to rely on someone else to do the watering for you; A drip watering system will really help with these things, if you do decide to use the shed base.

Best of both worlds, build it on a low wall with the brick vents allowing air to proceed from outside to inside (and vicky verky). Introduce good compost and when spent, replace. Less watering troubles this way.

If possible erect with the ridge running North - South, so it gets early morning and late evening sun. Cheers, Tony.

.............. And another thing to take into consideration if you put it on a concrete base is that in the summer the base gets hot and dry - ideal breeding ground for red spider mite. This mite is a real bitch to get rid of, and can devastate plants in a few days. To prevent this you will have to make sure the base is wet in the very hot days - quite an achievement if you have other things to do!!!
