I have a cherry tree (bld Stellar). Noticed what looked like mildew but on closer inspection found lots of 'things' that look like small leeches. Does anyone know
what they are, and how I can get rid of the problem and prevent it happening again?

Sounds like Wooley Aphids to me. As for the treatment a powerful hose can get rid of most of them, and follow up with a brush and soapy water for the rest. The soapy water sticks to the Aphid and prevents it from respirating through its skin. Prevention would include encouraging Ladybirds, Lacewings and Hoverflies to nest near or on the tree using a suitable nesting box.
