hope somebody can help i am in my second year of growing my own veg last year i had no issues with whitefly or earwigs. This year i have been swamped with withefly and earwigs, I have managed to keep the whitefly at bay but the earwigs i cant seem to control. I think they came from a bag of compost as they started in bed and have now spread to my complete lot can, anyone give me advice on how to control or completely get rid of these pests.

    Are they pests?

    What are they doing?

Do you think they will nibble my fat balls?

How do you know they are a pest rather than a nuisance?
    Are they doing any damage?
There is an old trick of putting an upturned flower pot stuffed with straw on top of a cane-earwigs crawl in at night and you dispose in morning-but in my experience they do no real damage apart from nibbling a few dahlia petals and probably do more good than harm-they have probably even had some of your whitefly!!
It is like lots of things in the garden- you cant really control them-they have legs and could stroll in from next-door-who knows?

i think there are doing damaged to my lettuces and cabbages and when harvested and cut in half i find them deep in the centre with tunnels that i think they have made.

Try the straw trick you can even use a cardboard box or such like to trap them-they need somewhere to hide.
Is there anything near your plants that they are spending their days-they are really night feeders-but it may not be them making the holes in the veg.
    Good luck

I had the same problem this year, I had an infestation and they completely destroyed my entire crop along with various companion flowers I had in the raised beds. I know it was the earwigs as I could see them eating at night if I went out with a torch, tried pots, newspaper and jars of sweet stuff they could drown in but never did manage to get rid so would be interested to hear if anybody else has a solution that works.

Earwiggles can be a problem in the fruit, apple and pear, crop digging all the way in to the centre. These things were made to test our quartering and coring ingenuity!

Why should you not share your fruit and veggies with other creatures?smiley - laugh
