    Hi all
    Can anyone recommend which garlic to plant? Last year, mine did not form cloves, they were just all in one and quite small, although very juicy and tasty. I planted them in autumn and lost half of them in that severe frost.. This year I shall try again, but will also plant more in March. Which ones store the best, as I try to plant a whole year's supply. The previous year I had a fantastic crop of really large bulbs, but they didn;t store well, and I didn't make a note of the strain.

    This is not very helpful but...

    My crop this year was excellent, twenty cloves planted out about this time last year, all went through the winter, all split and are proudly platted and stored.

    They were bought from Focus- now closed and just called 'garlic, grow your own ' so unless two of these bulbs can be used for planting now I'm in the same boat as you and looking for suggestions as to the best variety to plant out.

    If it is allowed. . . . The Garlic Farm told me of a variety that only had about six or seven cloves around the stalk. I had asked them to recommend a variety such as this as I find the tiny cloves closest to the stalk too fidly. I'm sorry to say I've forgotten the name, but they do exist. Cheers, Tony.

    Last year I had a good harvest, I bought cream of the crop allium sativum for £2 from wilkinsons. I only had space last year to plant on bulb/set of cloves. They store well too, I have them now plated in the kitchen.

    Solent Wight was given to me last year from someone who'd bought them from Isle of Wight garlic. They all split & were of a decent size considering I just put them in the pots of leftover soil from the summer crops (toms, chillis, courgettes etc.) & had to move some of them in April!

    I've had reasonable success with just using the larger cloves from supermarket garlic some years though!

    I am meant to be saving the largest cloves from my plaited stock of Solent W for planting again this autumn, but as I roast them whole mostly it's not really happening!

    I always do the autumn planting method. I can't remember which way round it is, but one type keeps far better than the other out of soft necked or hard necked, which they are divided into.

    One variety which only produces a few larger cloves is Porcelain garlic, variety Music which is available from a grower in Scotland. It is absolutely hardy as it is grown in the North of Scotland. You will find the growers details if you do a google search.
