    Hi,

Having been growing vegetables for a number of years now I have developed a keen interest in gardening. I want to start growing plants from seed an maybe sell a few if I have any extra. I have recently bought a small electric windowsill propagator to get me started. With the propagator, does this mean I can start growing seed immediately or do I need to wait to early spring to begin sowing seed as described on the back of the packets. I have all mixtures of things grasses and perennials.

    I hope you can help.

    Cheers

It is really getting a bit late for sowing now-germination in your propagator would not be a problem but growing on would be.
You need the right conditions for growing after germination -light and warmth-or you will end up with weak spindly plants. Light levels are drooping along with the temperatures.
Leave it till the spring- late Feb/early March- the instructions on the seed packet are the guide !!

I agree with the dogcody perhaps if you use the alphabetical index here for the plants you wish to grow, it will give you sowing dates, temperatures and aftercare notes.

    A word of warning!

Do not start too early what you have to remember is; they have to be grown on until planting time ( normally after all risk of frost has passed) and this can take up a lot of space.

I find germination is the easy bit, the hardening off and growing on can be a bit trying during late winters!

They have to be in a well lit frost free place until plantuing out time!

If you don't have these facilities........delay the sowing date.......the plants will catch up!

Best of luck with your new venture! Tg

Thanks Dogcody and Tee Gee, good to put things in perspective. Patience is a virtue and all that. I live in N. Ireland so I may need to invest in some sort of lighting to get things started early. I have just recently put up a Greenhouse that definately has helped alot to bring on plugs and stuff. The weather and lightning is definately an issue in the north!

Expect questions a plenty in the furture!

    Cheers
