I have taken out some potatoes which I had stored in a dark cupboard for eating a Xmas,to find 50% of them have grown a single shoot approx 50 mm long.I have removed the shoots by simply snapping them off and tested a potatoe cutting it in half and it looks O.K.
Is there any reason that we cannot eat them as planned ?

Dear MikeWW
A late response to your mail but there is nothing wrong with your potatoes, they've just started to grow a little because of conditions not being very cold. Potatoes should be kept not only in the dark but in as cool as place you can find without them being frosted. Keep checking your potatoes (weekly) and pinch off any side shoots. If you don't the potatoes will go soft and wrinkly. They'll eventually go soft anyway but you can delay this. Hopefuly you'll have enough left for Christmas.
Happy eating.

Thankyou for your comment it was most helpful.I thought I was O.K. with storage temperature 15 0c in a cupboard inside the house. Next year I will try a cooler place ( the Garage ) We had a sample taster yesterday and the family gave them thumbs up.
Regards

Mine are still 1 foot under. I am hoping it will be good weather tomorrow so I can dig them up.
