After seeing Monty Don on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú TV a few months ago telling the viewers it was time to drastically cut back the growth of their tomato plants to ensure ripening of the crop, I decided to let mine grow.
The seed was a wild one that was dropped somehow between the wall of the house and the concrete path.
It is still growing and 2 weeks ago I harvested a bowl of tomatoes.
On Christmas day I picked a couple of toms.
I have not contributed to the growth, in fact I have chopped it a couple of times, but it stands at the moment at over 6ft.
Is this plant a freak of nature or is this happening all over the country. (By the way I live in SE London).

Perish the thought that I would ever agree with anything Monty Don said about gardening matters. However, he's right on this occasion; it’s not usual or practical to be harvesting tomatoes here in the UK at Christmas.

Congratulations on defying the text books!

I think Monty was a bit quick off the mark, but it really depends on where you live and the weather. We have had very little frost here this winter, very different from last year. Some years I get toms in December. I picked the last toms and peppers from the green house last week, and cleaned out the plants. My toms did not really grow from September onwards and those that were green in September turn very slowly red some taking until December. They are ok but no way as good as those picked in the summer. The peppers did grow slowly and are just as good as those picked in the summer.

Top_vern...save some seeds off the toms you have left, as you may have a true hardy Tom there.....may just be the weather, but you never know.

If you do end up saving some seeds then let us know what happens next year when you grow them.

I for one will look out for the post.
