    Hello,

I asked for manure as part of my Christmas list but did not get any. I have been told it is too late now to put fresh stuff on but my soil needs feedings before it gets too late my question

Is it too late to put chicken manure on?
What can I use to give the soil a real good feed?

    many thanks
    wendy

    Hi Wendy

I suggest the product 6X may be the answer to your needs.

6X is wonderful stuff. It's organic and has the same nutrients as manure, but about 6 times more concentrated. It's sterile so doesn't have weed seeds, or other hidden nasties. I swear by it, I've used it for years, before I had an allotment. You can even use it as a liquid fertiliser by leaving a couple of handfuls in a bucket for a week or so. It is very concentrated so you don't need much. I tend to dig it in when/where I'm going to plant or sow so I don't waste it.

There is something with a different name that the company tell me is exactly the same but sold in garden centres not through allotments. I can't remember the name. 6x is cheaper.

Don't bother to put on chicken manure now, it's mostly nitrogen, which is good for some crops, but it'll wash away in the rain during the Winter. If you want to use it put it on in the Spring, I'd advise that you don't use it too heavily otherwise you'll get wonderful looking, green, flourishing plants that are mostly leaves and no fruit/crop etc.

I hope this helps. Of course there are other fertilisers you can use, some of them organic, but 6x is good for most things. I don't use it for roots, 'cause I think it's too rich.

I've just visited the website and it looks a very good product. I'll probably order some in the next few days. Lottie, when you say it's too rich for roots, does that mean root crops?

    Isn't 6X a rather tasty Wadsworth beer?

Personally I would dig in well rotted manure at any time of the year, and do so. Some of the soil in my raised beds has sunk a little so I will be adding some horse muck in the next few weeks. As for 'washing it away' surely the goodness will be washed further down into the soil? Unless you garden on the slopes of Beachy Head smiley - winkeye

More importantly the root doesn't grow because the leaves are so lush- and after all it's the roots that count!

Nitrates are very soluble, so when they get leached out that's what it means, the nitrates dissolve in the rain/water and soak away from the topsoil which is where the plant's roots need it.
