I live in Piedmont and have been showing off to friends since Oct what a good winter its been - no rain, no snow - sunny warm days. Should have know better - it snowed yesterday - 2 foot of the stuff.

I have on my allotment a 2,000 litre water butt, which due to the exceptionally dry summer is totally empty. I remember reading somewhere that snow is poor mans fertiliser so ......

An empty water butt - a surplus of snow - theres only one solution, fill the water butt with the snow. My husband now knows I am totally mad, my Italian neighbours passing me in the car know I am mad, and I am now beginning to wonder - Am I ????

To what lengths have other readers gone for their allotments ?

La pazzia è negli occhi di chi guarda! Shovel the snow in there, make the most of it. You'll need it.

Hi - Iike the Italian saying - is it a true Italian idiom, or one you have made up yourself - which ever - it is very true. Still snowing and extremely cold - the cats food has frozen in the bowl !!

Will leave further snow collection until it warms up a little or my husband will find me, a human snowman, frozen in the garden.

It's real Italian. There are a couple of ways of expressing it in Italian, that's one of them.

We had quite a bit of sunshine today and some of the snow is starting to melt. The weather report for this week is getting warmer - up to 5 degrees plus by Friday.I will now start to panic when the snow melts - I need it in my water butt !!

We had about two feet of the stuff a fortnight ago, lots more forecast and threatened, but none of any significance eventuated. Clear sunny skies now, pretty cold, and the thaw is very slow. The streets are loaded with salt.

I'm going to have to clear a couple of feet of frozen snow off the top of the compost heap. I've got a fortnight's worth of kitchen scraps in bags on the terrace. Chilled, but starting to pong!
