I sowed seed of Bedfordshire Championin mid January in peat pots on the window sill. I got about 60% germination but they are still very weak looking blades of grass about a couple of inches long hardly capable of standing up. Is this normal. Is growing onions in this way a practical proposition?
Yes this is practical, but the seedlings should be sturdy and upright. Too dark, too wet, too warm? Difficult to tell from what you wrote. They should be hardy if you put them in the greenhouse.
Yes like me you missed the boat. Other allotmenteers sow them on the shortest day back in December or even earlier and over winter them.
Don't be too worried about smaller plants. I always grown half from sets and half from seeds. The latter are smaller but always store better than big onions.

I to "missed the boat" and its also the first time from seed......I only want to grow them to a good size for the fun of it.....think I'm on the right road now, got them under a old grow light I had for the chickens with a bit of bottom heat.
