    Hi this year i want to grow a lot of courgettes/marrows and punkings. and i was wondering if i could use weed Fabric Membrane so the fruit dont get muddy and also to keep the weeds down as only really have weekends free to weed.
    Also would it work for cabbages/cauliflowers etc
    Also any ideas to keep the weeds down.
    many thanks

    Why not grow them up a tripod! I've done this for a number of years. You have to keep 'tying the plants in' but the fruits are easier to spot and dirt free.

    The brassicas should be tall enough to see over the weeds and stay dirt free.

    Cheers, Tony.

    I grow my plants on top of the compost heap in rings ( bottomless buckets) sunk into the compost for stability.

    Regarding dirty fruit all I do with the marrows an pumpkins is sit them on a brick/ board and this keeps them quite clean.

    With courgettes these tend not to touch the soil ( providing you don't let them get too large.)

    Regarding weeds; I don't find these a problem ( even on top of the compost heap) because the leaf system is so large it screens the light from the weeds and most do not survive in such conditions.

    I forgot to mention "weed control" on your brassicas, again I find because of leaf size this is not a problem I have!

    I find that usually I only have to hoe once after planting out. I normally do this about three or four weeks after planting out then the big leaves take control.

    Perhaps the way I plant out and add lime helps to keep the weeds down! See here;

    When I do my hoeing I also hoe in the surplus lime and any weeds that have formed, which is usually very few, plus I think the lime keeps the slugs and snails at bay, I think the lime burns their bellys'

    The armillatox I use is said to keep club root at bay, I am not sure about that I think it is the lime that does that, but the armillatox certainly keeps the cabbage white and cabbage fly away.

    I think it is the smell.

    I find that I am generally relatively weed free, club root free, caterpillar and cabbage fly free so for what ever the reason, this method works for me so I am sticking to it

    All I do know is; I do not need the extra expense of weed control membrane, which incidentally I think creates the perfect shady location for slugs and snails to keep out of the sun during the day.....but then again,that's only an opinion..Tg
