I'm trying mooli again...

  Hi,
  
  I tried unsuccessfully to grow mooli last year, the first sowing bolted and the second was all foilage with little underground. The third sowing was probably to late in the growing season and didn't really take off.
  
  I've prepared a raised open bottomed planter on the veg bed filled with compost, no stones and it's been warming nicely for a couple of weeks.
  
  It seems alittle early to sow but the instructions say mooli prefers cooler weather. I've more seeds than I need and was going to sprinkle a dozen seeds on the raised planter and keep it covered.
  
  I also have a french black radish, bought on impulse last year, the distructions are all in french, I thought, how hard can it be to grow radish, well it turned out to be harder than you think. These should grow to the length of mooli mine were like miss shaped carrots
  
  Are there any do's and don't's for a successful crop

  I prefer to sow them quite late in the season July / Aug when the soil is quite warm then let them mature in the cooler autumn weather?
  
  I harvest them as required quite often in dec/ jan subject to how the weather has been.
  
  I would suggest you try the same with your Black radish which I guess will be similar to Black Russian which is a winter variety.

  The late sowing of mooli showed little growth so pulled it out about October time
  prehaps if left it may have produced more growth. Did you sow straight into the ground? I'll still try a sowing now, it's a learning curve and if it bolts will wait until July time to try again...
  
  The black radish - if- 'semis' means sow then that one should be sown in Jun/Jul/Aug and if 'recolte' means harvest then it should be ready to harvest in Sept/Oct/Nov.
  
  I was wanting to sow some winter vegs this year and black radish sounds like a fairly quick growing one which can be planted later in the growing season.
  
  I struggled to grow bulb fennel last year but it's much to early to even think about sowing that one.

  Yes I sow directly into the soil!
  
  My French is a bit rusty so looked the words up
  
  Semis is something to do with prepared seedbed, so I guess this means sow in a prepared bed
  
  Recolte means harvest
  
  I also think that the type of season can can affect the final cropping, and last year was a bit rubbish for root crops.........too dry
  
  If it is any consolation my mooli crop was quite poor last year as well
