    I find Jack O' Lantern a nice size for my grandkids (4-10yrs) I have grown Hundredweight but as the name suggests the kids have all on to lift them!

    In terms of area I grow four plants in an area of about 6ft x 6ft but the thing is they tend to creep up to 8-10 ft from the growing spot if you allow them.

    To confine them, let them grow until you see that two or three fruit have set, then cut the growing tip off.

    They need loads of moisture but not water-logged soil, I grow mine on the compost heap!

    This link might help;

    Dig a square hole spade deep and fill with manure/compost. Either plant plant or seed.

    Jack o lantern is my favourite. It produces different sized pumpkins.

    I never plant them any closer then 1.5metres to each other, otherwise halloween will start early. I did try 1 metre apart and what an absolute NIGHTMARE !!! I had.

    Plenty of compost in the hole at planting out time and a good size handful of growmore/fertilizer around the plant, when fruits start to swell feed weekly with tomato feed and water regularly, snip the tendril when 2 pumpkins have formed. Lift the growing pumpkins off the soil and onto something like straw or other - I use old seed trays because the drainage holes are already there. When they start to turn orange, turning the fruit helps to develop a more unformed colour.

    And finally, on the 14th of October I cut them from the plant, leaving a 2 inch stalk where possible, and let them set for 2weeks in a sunny but cool greenhouse.

    I prefer starting my seeds off in a greenhouse rather then sowing in the ground - better results IMO, but its up to you really.

    I set 12 seeds away only yesterday.
