im after beefsteak tomatoes, what varities are there and where can i buythem
I bought some Black Russian from a leading seed supplier on line last year and they produced well so have sown the seeds that were left again this year. Am hoping for the same results.
Annmarie, there are dozens and dozens of beefsteak varieties. Most are mid-late season producers, meaning they take 80-90 days from planting out to maturity. So you'll need a decent growing season.
The best heirloom beefsteak is the Pink Brandywine. It's a glorious tomato. They're available online at T&M.
Not cheap, but they're the real thing. There are a lot of fake Brandywine seeds around. It's a dark pink beefsteak on a potato leaf plant - the leaves have smooth or scalloped edges, unlike the regular leaf plants with the jagged edges.
If you go with the Brandywine, plant two or three if you have the space to guarantee decent production.
Let me know if you need a few more suggestions.
I am growing "mortgage lifter"-purely because I liked the name and am intrigued to see how they turn out
There are loads of varieties and suppliers, look on-line,garden centre ,Lidl Wilkinsons,etc,etc................ other stores are available
You are spoilt for choice.
I agree with the varieties mentioned but I still prefer the original Brandywine. I also grow Beefmaster, Big Boy! and Black Russian. Cheers, Tony.
tdc, Mortgage Lifter is a nice reliable tom without any claims to greatness. Very popular in the States with home growers. Nice story about the name's origins, too, but it's a myth.
Just re-read your last paragraph annmarie. I get my big tom seeds from Simpsons Seeds. Cheers, Tony.
There's a newish beefsteak variety called Legend which is supposed to be blight resistant. It's a bush variety. Thomson and Morgan sell it, and possibly other merchants. I got some huge tomatoes when I first grew them in 2010 (one weighed over a pound!) but last year they didn't do so well - as someone has said, they ripen quite late, and there simply wasn't enough heat in August/September last year for mine to ripen.
