    Hi,

Have grown leeks for the last couple of seasons without much success! The main problem being that the leeks don’t get much bigger than spring onions what am I not doing or should be doing?? Also had the same issue with beetroot - having thinned the seedlings out the beets don’t swell into anything decent sized or useful!
Any ideas or help greatly appreciated.

First I should test the pH of your soil, adjusting if required. After that I should add more general fertilizer. Blood, Fish and Bone. Cheers, Tony

Sow leek in seed tray first, transplant when about a pencil thick by making a hole same length but wider, put leek in, soil will back fill by itself.
Plant beetroot seed 2in apart, don't bother thinning as they do not like their roots disturbed.

Possibly lack of moisture and feeding.

Maybe lots of water and making sure you have a good fertile soil. You cant keep taking out without putting back. I thinned mine out well and buried them well earthing them up as they grew too.
Beetroot do tend to be quite thirsty Ive found as we had a dry time last year some of mine were quite small as they did not get enough attention at the right time. A new addition in the family (a grand daughter by caezar) and I had a two year old to cope with so things went a bit amiss at the wrong hot time.
    Good luck.

    hi
. I have been having the same problem as you, although this years where slightly better. I have since learnt that when transplanting the young plants . they need to be put in wide holes and fairly deep.when they are established they can be earthed up (ie to blanche them) .They also need watering regularly.Hope this of some help..

I use these methods too. I fork in garden compost a few weeks before I plant them out, and make sure they're kept well watered to start with. Once established water them every week or so if the weather is dry.

I was harvesting the leeks I grew last year up until end of February this year
