I have a few questions about growing raspberries which you helpful people may be able to answer

Firstly, should I wait until Autumn to plant canes?

secondly, How much room do i need, and how many plants to get a decent harvest?

Thirdly, can I grow 2 varieties (summer and autumn) together to have an extended harvest?

    Thanks in advance!

Monty dealt with planting raspberries on the first programme of GW-go about 10minutes 40seconds in on this link for a practical demonstration-it may not answer all your questions but it will help

    Lovelyveg

I planted out 5 autumn fruiting raspberry canes about the end of April last year (joan j were the variety) and they grew quite well and I got a few berries off them. The lack of fruit had more to do with the lack of summer we had in Glasgow though I think.

So in answer to your first question, I certainly wouldn't wait till autumn. Get them in the ground over the next tmonth or so and you should receive some havest this year.

As far as space goes, I was advised to plant abouot a foot apart. I bought 5 canes and they are all in so I hope to have a decent harvest this year. I suppose it also depends on the variety as well as some are heavier croppers than others.

Planting summer and autumn varieties will give you a longer season but planting summer canes now might not leave quite enough time. You may as well give it a go though and post your results. Next year will be the more bountiful I would imagine for you.

As I have said before in other posts, I'm no expert but just giving out what I have learnt through giving it a bash so if others have more sound advice then fair enough.

Thanks for the replies, all advice helpful! I guess as with most gardening queries the answer is to give it a go and see what happens! I'll keep you posted...
