I do this with tomatoes & chillis (up to the seed leaves) as they just produce roots along the stems.
Is the same true with cucumbers or will the stems just rot? I usually lose one out of 4 each year to rot so don't want to encourage it.
Haven't grown them for a few years but neck rot is a common problem-so no- do not bury the stem.
Have a read of this from TG's site
Hmm, I wonder if they'll survive being a bit leggy then., or if I should regrow if it's not too late.
It talks about mounding soil up around the stem to allow water to run away from it to keep it dryer, but I guess planting it deep is bound to encourage it to rot sadly.
I had hoped TG would step in at this point as I had referred you to his advice but he must have missed it-this is what he advised on another question so you are not too late to start again-far from it
Yes I read that, I can get away with starting a bit earlier here in West Sussex, but it's good to know I still have time to start some more.
You have plenty of time to start off new cucumbers. My local nursery is just starting theirs off, and they sell hundreds.
I wouldn't pile soil around the stem - just to where the stem meets the soil.I usually make a little mound then plant my cue on the top of it and try to not get too much water around the stem. You have plenty of time to sow more cues - I haven't sown any yet
