Our broad beans and peas are devastated annually be these pests, according to the references I have found there is no chemical treatment, does anyone have an effective strategy?
I would like to know the answer to this too, my broad beans getting munched big time yet again. Have tried a homemade rhubarb spray even though I know it's not approved of, but is there anything else that might work. I do not want to harm anything else, just the * weevils!
When you say 'devastated'...
Our pea and bean plants get nibbled round the outside edge of the leaves, but it doesn't seem to check the plant or affect the crop. So, I just ignore it, let the plants outgrow the short-lived attack and enjoy the crop regardless.
My pea crops have also been devastated by this pest. Puts you right off when you pop a pod and find its someone home.
I've found this method online.
Pea moth larvae are most destructive during July/August. The adults usually lay their eggs on leaves or flowers during May/ June. Larvae emerge about 3 weeks later looking for pods.
Sow peas early or late, like in February or late May, so that they are not in flower during June or July.
or, cover the plant with fleece.
I sowed my first batch of peas in Feb, let see what happens.....
Think I've a read the title, wrong.
If only, Trillium, but mine have been badly affected with the growing tips attacked as well as the leaf edges.
I had a problem with these last year, and it's beginning this year too, with the broad beans. The only thing I could do last year was to try to pick the weevils offf by hand or shake them off into a bucket of water. I used to hold the bucket in among the plants and try to tap the top of each plant so that the weevils on it would fall into the water. I certainly caught a lot of weevils that way, which was quite satisfying, although I suppose there were many more I didn't catch. The plants survived the attack and we had lots of beans.
