I'm a bit confused. Last year I tried growing cucumbers outside, and, despite being in northern Spain, the weather was a bit changeable, and they didn't really do very well. I bought them as plugs, and they came with two plants in each plug, I'm assuming a male and a female. (?)
This year I'm thinking about growing them indoors in pots from seed. I've got some 'Le Genereux' seeds, which I don't know if are for indoor or outdoor growing, and the only info I can find on the internet is that, surprisingly, it's 'a French variety'.
My question is, if I grow them indoors, will I have to pollinate them by hand, and, also, what depth of pot would they need?
In the U.K. outdoor cucumbers normally resemble the gerkins found in jars on the counter of all good fish and chip shops. Indoor cuc's are the long green things sliced up in salads. Hope this helps? Cheers, Tony.
The question of pollination of cucumbers is confusing, because some have to be pollinated, and some do not. It depends on the variety.
The variety you mention, I have never grown, so I cannot comment on that.
The easiest way IMO is to choose an all female variety. These cucumbers do not need pollinating at all. You don`t even have to think about it.
Thanks for those replies. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info about this type. From the photo on the packet it looks like and outdoor type.
They look like slicers to me. I grow a couple of different varieties of slicers outdoors here in central Italy. They thrive in the hot sun.
Problem is, we can't be guaranteed hot sun where I live, hence the dilemma about growing them indoors. Still can't decide...
What sort of summer temps do you get?
We can get anything from 20ºC to 40ºC, but it's never constant, it usually fluctuates. The ones I planted outside last year grew in fits and starts depending on the weather, so I think I had about 4 cucumbers in total, the biggest about 4 inches long.
Cukes and pumpkins are the big warmth-lovers in the vegie garden but they should do perfectly well with temps into the 20s over the growing period. I wonder whether temperature was the problem.
