I have just been to the garden centre and bought some sweet peas. I'm new to gardening and will plant my own from seed next year, but is it too early to plant the ones I have bought outside now?
thank you
Chris
Some gardeners have had their seeds growing since last autumn! They believe that overwintering gets them better / more flowers.
I'm just about to plant mine for this years showing. If you research sweet pea growing, you may see that some gardeners also think you get a stronger plant if you cut off the main growth and concentrate on one of the side shoots. You may not get quite a good a showing by saving your seed this year for next, but you may be able to prove me wrong.
That's enough for you to be getting on with ! Cheers, Tony.
I have just been to the garden centreÂ
There might be a potential problem here , a lot depends upon how the garden centre has kept them! e.g in a heated or in a cool environment.
The other thing is; I don't know where you are, for example parts of Scotland are to get snow tonight and possibly the North of England, personally I don't think winter is quite over yet!
OK Sweet peas are quite hardy but to be safe I would suggest you harden them off for a couple of weeks before planting them out, and ths will cover the situation if they have been getting kept indoors recently.
This link might help;
Don't forget to nip them out, if this has not already been done, and they benefit from a moisture retentive soil, full sun and plenty of potash,
I planted my sweet peas out a couple of weeks ago. I grew them from seed last autumn and they have been in an unheated potting shed all winter so they were used to the cold. I live on the sussex coast in a warmer part of the UK. As others have said, the ones in the garden centre may not have been hardened off yet so do that first.
Thank you all very much for your replies
Chris
