So far each strawberry season I lose out to blackbirds - I check the fruit every day and wait until they are fully ripe, only to find the blackbirds get to the fruit before I do. I tried shiny bits of string on canes etc. I even have a cat but the blackbirds still win.
Has anyone any tips on how to keep them off?
Just net them when the fruit start to swell, and also, putting a layer of straw under each plant helps to protect them from contact with the soil.

I agree with both points, make sure it is straw. I had access to some hay but it goes all wet and soggy after rains where straw will shed the rainwater and remain firm. Cheers, Tony.
