    Hello all

Am new to this site although have been an avid follower of posts for the past few weeks. Am also fairly new to growing, have tried growing various veggies in my garden for the last couple of years, with varying successes, but have been learning from my mistakes (last year was atrocious!)

Just wanted to ask, I bought some chicken manure pellets as they were on offer at local garden centre, am I ok to use these as general fertilizer for all veggies? I'm putting together a couple of small raised beds and planned on digging the pellets in with the soil/compost, then planting things out in the coming weeks (mid-end May-ish).

I'm in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and have a south facing garden that gets the sun most of the day. Hopefully am not too late with preparing my raised beds, I have tended to start too early in previous years so have been super-patient this year and am only just starting growing seeds now. Was going to try sweetcorn, kale, florence fennel, beans and peas in beds and tomatoes, cucumber, aubergines, salad and chillies in pots/containers. I do have a small greenhouse as well. Any tips gratefully received!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    K

Chicken manure pellets ("cluck muck") fine to use as general long term fertiliser. They need to be moistened after application. I also chuck the occasional handful into my compost bins to act as an accelerant.
Remember they won't do much in themselves to improve the structure of your soil - you need bulky organic matter for that.

    Hi, NGK,

Welcome to the message boards. I'm in the NW with a garden that gets sun all day and if like me you have good soil the list of things you can grow is almost endless.

Don't see anything wrong with using chicken pellets, I'm nearer the coast/Cumbrian boarder so make my own seaweed fertiliser.

I've grown sweetcorn for the past two years but giving the soil a rest this year. It germinates well on damp kitchen roll before planting in pots. You will need to wait until the last forcasted frost before planting out, sweetcorn needs a long growing season so don't expect to harvest until late/Sept, if lucky or early October time. Mini sweetcorn can be harvested slightly earlier.

Sweetcorn likes to have deep roots so dig a trench and plant out in the trench, then as it grows earth up like you would spuds. It can grow very tall, the deep roots stops it from bending in the wind. Also needs to be planted in blocks to aid pollination.

I've struggled to grow florence fennel but trying again this year so will be interested to know how you get on with that one. Pea's and beans do really well in our wet region and if you have limited space are ideal as they grow vertical. Courgettes do well in pots. Toms do well both in GH and out doors. Chillies and peppers do well in the GH , I've found they grow less well outdoors.

There are other posters from the Manchester area, hopefully they'll respond with advise but which ever region, I've had some excellent advise over time from posters up and down the country and also abroad.

Pelleted chicken manure is an excellent general fertiliser for both veggies and ornamentals but you need to add lime to the soil before planting brassicas as this helps with club root and some kind of sequestered iron feed if you're growing acid loving plants such as blueberries.

As for the boards closing, many people from here are migrating to the Gardeners World boards - see the design board for a link and other possibilities. The GW site forum has a wider selection of boards and a PM facility and hosts who actually know about gardening so shluld provide a good new home.
