I'm in the process of adding some raised beds to my garden. I've some spare garden soil to use, and spent potting compost to make up the rest before enriching the finished beds with my homemade compost. I'm sieving out the larger stones from the soil, but the spent compost has lots of horticultural grit. Do these smaller stones affect carrots and other root crops?
Thanks in advance.

I shouldn't think small stones will make the carrots fork, I believe that is what you are worried about.
I should leave the grit in there as it is believed to retain moisture around the stones and grit. If you are at all concerned, work a dibber into the soil, add good grit clear soil into the hole and plant your carrots in there.
Cheers, Tony.

Good advice, I'll remember the dibber suggestion just in case I do run into problems.
