After you have hoed out or scratched your groove and started to spread your seed in the groove, before you stand up to 'unknot' your back or refil your hand, drop a pebble or a small lump of soil at the place you have reached.
It's a begger trying to see the seeds and tell where you got to, easy with seeds of parsnip, but not so easy to see with turnip or swede.
